Instant Pot Cabbage
Cabbage is a Southern Classic that doesn’t seem to get as much love as collard greens. What I love about southern cabbage is how quick and easy it is to make and how flavorful it is with the right ingredient additions.
Growing up I loved when my Grandma made cabbage and I enjoyed it with an entree as a delicious side dish and as a main dish with a side of cornbread as well.
It was definitely a staple growing up. What makes it even better is how it can be made in the instant pot in half the time and still have the delicious and wonderful flavors. It is definitely a perfect weeknight meal.

This Instant Pot Cabbage Recipe is packed with a ton of flavor and the Instant Pot is an easy way to make it. It comes together so quickly making it a a great way to make an easy side dish to add as a side to any dinner meal.
Instant Pot Cabbage Ingredients

Green Cabbage- a sweet and mild taste vegetable. A whole head of cabbage my seem like a lot but it cooks down tremedously.
Butter– this is used to add flavor and cook the onions, green pepper, red pepper and sausage in.
Onion- provides a great flavor and texture.
Green and Red pepper- this adds a great flavor and texture.
Turkey Smoked Sausage– provides flavor and adds a bit of fat.
Chicken Broth-the flavors of the broth that the cabbage cooks in provides the cabbage tons of flavor. (You can use water or vegetable broth, the flavor will be different and you would need to adjust accordingly.)
Simple Seasonings- like salt, ground black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, garlic and herb seasoning, and chicken bouillon add flavor to the cabbage.
How to prep the cabbage for cooking?
Prior to cooking the entire cabbage in the pressure cooker you need to wash and cut the whole cabbage head into strips. I like to remove the outer leaves, then cut a little of the end off to make a flat surface with a sharp knife, I then cut the cabbage in half.
Next, I remove the core of the cabbage by cutting a “ V” shape around the core and discard it. Lastly, I proceed to cut the cabbage into strips.
How to make cabbage in an Instant Pot?
Cook the sausage and remove.
Use the Saute mode for the onions, green pepper, and red pepper in a few tablespoons of butter and olive oil.
Add the chicken broth.
Add the chopped cabbage.
Add the seasonings.
Stir and set to high pressure cook.
Quick release the pressure, stir, then serve.
How long does it take to cook cabbage in the Instant Pot?
This recipe is not too soft and not too crunchy. Cooking the cabbage for three minutes on high provides the perfect texture. If you like soft cabbage, increase the time a minute and if you like very crunchy cabbage, decrease a minute.
How to store cabbage?
You can store the cooked cabbage leftovers in the refrigerator for 4 days in an airtight container. I love how the cabbage flavor gets better the next day.

Instant Pot Cabbage
- Pressure Cooker
- 1 head cabbage cored (2.5 pounds)
- 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
- 1 16 oz smoked turkey sausage sliced
- 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
- 1 small onion diced (½ cup)
- ½ cup green pepper
- ½ cup red pepper
- ¾ chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon of onion powder
- 1 tablespoon of garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons of garlic and herb seasoning
- ½ teaspoon of chicken bouillon
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- ½ teaspoon of pepper
- Chop cabbage into 1 inch slices.
- Cook sausage on Brown, 4 to 5 minutes, or until browned.
- Remove sausage and set aside.
- Add butter and stir until melted. Add onions and peppers and saute.
- Pour in the chicken broth.
- Place the chopped cabbage into the pot.
- Add the seasonings and sausage.
- Stir the cabbage until coated.
- Set the pressure cooker to high for 3 minutes.
- Use the quick release method to reduce the pressure. Open the lid and stir. Transfer to a serving dish and enjoy.
